Azure Dynamics visited San Luis Obispo for a ride-and-drive event featuring the HD Senator hybrid gasoline bus. The paratransit bus features a series hybrid drivetrain for an average fuel economy increase of about 40% in stop-and-go traffic over the gas-only version. C5 Staff and local transit operators were treated to a smooth, quiet ride with good pickup and a very manageable regenerative braking system.

The Senator's hybrid drivetrain is also used by Azure in a commercial truck application currently in service with US and Canadian delivery fleets. In 2005 Azure Dynamics acquired Solectria, the former manufacturer of all-electric vehicles such as the Solectria Force.
